reflections of a wizard in training

I keep saying that I don’t build web sites anymore, but that’s not entirely true: I’ve just launched a new web site and I have another one coming up. The first one is an online store for the university Alumni Association. The design is very “iffy”, the product images are hideous, but the back-end is solid (as I hope) - developed by yours truly.

The second one is a new web site for the Computer Science Department, here at UNI. It’s far from ready, but here’s a glimpse of what it will look like [correction: launched at www.cs.uni.edu]. See the keyboard in the top right corner? That’s what computer science is about - keyboards, monitors, and, occasionally, microchips… at least according to my design solution. I can’t help quoting Edsger Dijkstra: “Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.” I know that… For me, computer science is about discovering and creating beautiful and exciting things - from algorithms to virtual worlds. Yes, I know - that sounds awfully idealistic, but that’s what, in my opinion, science is about, more or less – and that’s what I tried to convey in my new design. I couldn’t. Let’s hope I’ll be a better scientist than web designer..

This happens to me all the time: what was supposed to take an hour or two, took all day. I have finally updated my web projects web page. It turns out, I have 47 web sites “on my record.” And yes, I know I’ll be the only one to ever look at those project descriptions :-)
